When you plan a moving, you have to pass several stages, and the first is finding the right Moving Company.
How to choose the right moving company?
The best advice is to ask your relatives and friends, who recently relocated. This will help you either immediately choose the moving company to stick to, or will help you make the list of local moving companies shorter (another way to find companies you don’t want to use is to search the Internet for the customers’ feedback).
If you didn’t get any advice, just make the list of such companies, which provide all the services that you need.
It is usually cheaper to order full-package services from one Company, than ordering different services in different companies.
Check out the rates of the companies. Better contact the official support service, which can then redirect you to their local branch. This will help you avoid intermediaries and their commissions.
It is important that you check the company’s license and insurance before you entrust your belongings and access to your property to their employees.
Find out important details about the moving process of the companies, including:
Guarantee of compliance with the delivery deadlines
Whether the team, which loads your belongings is the same team that will unload them at their arrival
Check out the rates and charging methods
Read the cancellation policy and see if it fits you
Ask if you have to pay the deposit
Sum up the advantages and disadvantages of each company and choose the one that suits you the best.

Now that you have picked your moving company, it’s time to think over the packing phase. If you want your belongings to arrive to the destination in the same condition you are used to see them in your house, please take this phase seriously.
Of course, the best solution is to leave this task for the experts, such as, Atlantic Group USA LLC. If you decide, though, that you can cope with the task, please read our tips below, which can help you with your home packing. If you don’t have packing materials, feel free to give us a call and place an order for the packing materials and boxes. We’re always happy to help!
Which items should I leave with me instead of having them delivered to my new place?
Please keep in mind that you will need some things to be left with you, because it will be impossible to get anything out of the truck during its way to the destination. Besides, anything can happen, and some delays in delivery are possible, so you should keep some necessary things with you, such as:
snacks for you and your family and pet food for your pets,
toilet paper, toothbrush/paste, soap or wet wipes,
chargers for your phones and gadgets (don’t forget to have your power banks fully charged before the moving time)
change of clothes for every family member,
favorite toys of your kids and pets,
important paperwork (e.g., birth certificates, social security cards, recipes for important medications), highly valuable or sentimental things.
Don’t leave to much stuff with you, because you don’t want your travel to be gloomed by a heavy luggage. Make one or two bags or backpacks with all you need, and you’re ready to go!
How to pack a house in the most efficient way?
Give yourself to pack 2-3 days before the scheduled moving day, depending on the amount of things, furniture and appliances you have in your house. Add one more day, just in case it takes longer or you need to restock on packing materials and boxes.
Usually, people prefer packing one room at a time. It makes it easier to arrange things in your new house, and you won’t be left wondering where the rest of your favorite bedding is. It’s up to you to decide, though, but this method can save your from stress during the unpacking and arranging phase.
If you choose to pack room-after-room, make the first the one that you don’t use much.
What is the best size box for moving?
There is no such thing as a box size, which fits perfectly any aim. Moving boxes come in a variety of sizes, and each goes better for certain items. Usually, people need more than 1-2 box sizes to have their belongings packed properly. You get to choose from the following options:
Small (1.5 ft3): best for heavy items such as books, canned goods, shoes, etc.
Medium (3 ft3): best for items without a uniform shape such as lamps, lamp shades, or small kitchen appliances.
Large (4.5 ft3) and extra-large box (6 ft3): best for light items like pillows and bedding.
Picture box: best for framed artwork, mirrors, and other thin items that are fragile and breakable.
Dish barrel and dish pack inserts: best for packing dishes and other fragile kitchen items.
Wardrobe box: best for clothes on hangers.
How many moving boxes do I need to pack everything?
First step is to calculate the square footage of your house (See below how to do it correctly). Below, you will find an approximate amount of boxes you might need, depending on your house area and on our packing experience.
> 500 sq ft: 4 – 13 large boxes, 9 – 16 medium boxes, 11 – 17 small boxes, 2 – 6 dish barrels, and 2 – 6 wardrobe boxes.
500 – 1000 sq ft: 6 – 16 large boxes, 11 – 21 medium boxes, 16 – 26 small boxes, 4 – 7 dish barrels, 4 – 7 wardrobe boxes.
1,001 – 1,500 sq ft: 11 – 22 large boxes, 16 – 27 medium boxes, 21 – 33 small boxes, 5 – 7 dish barrels, 5 – 8 wardrobe boxes.
1,501 – 2,000 sq ft: 16 – 27 large boxes, 22 – 32 medium boxes, 31 – 43 small boxes, 6 – 8 dish barrels, 6 – 11 wardrobe boxes.
< 2,000 sq ft: 22 – 35 large boxes, 27 – 36 medium boxes, 42 – 52 small boxes, 6 – 10 dish barrels, 9 – 15 wardrobe boxes.
How to calculate the square footage of your home?
Take the measuring tape or a steel tape measure and measure the length and width of the rooms. You can either move the furniture and appliances out of your way or measure the room in the area, in which these do not interfere with accurate measuring.
Write down all measurements for all rooms accordingly. For each room, multiply its length by its width.
Add the numbers that you get for each room, and you’ll get the estimate square footage of your house, which can help you estimate how many packing boxes you will need to pack all your belongings.
How to pack a box?
Make sure that you get undamaged boxes and check if you can close the box before you start packing it. To do this, you first need to assemble the boxes, if these are flattened. Unfold them, i.e. pull the sides into a square. Then fold smaller flaps down. After this, fold the larger flaps. Use a single piece of packing tape to fixate the seam. For heavier objects, you should better do it twice.
Place the packing peanuts or crumpled packing paper on the bottom of the box to keep your goods from jolting around and breaking.
When you pack fragile items, use packing paper to wrap them. For extremely delicate items, use tissue paper.
After wrapping the items, carefully place them in the box as tightly as possible, but make sure not to overcrowd the box, so that you can close it without breaking the items. Please, place larger and heavier items on the bottom of the box, and then fit in the smaller items around them.
Cover the items with packing paper or a portion of packing peanuts, if any space is left to prevent the items from moving inside the box during the transportation.
When you finish packing and close the flaps of the box, secure the seal with one or two layers of packing tape. Make sure that the box top is flat. Otherwise, any part, which stands over the top of the box may be damaged during the transportation, because the boxes are usually stacked.
Another important step is to label your boxes to endure a faster and stress-free unpacking, as well as safe transportation of fragile items.
How to label the moving boxes?
You can either decide before the packing, what goes in each box, or you can do it along the way, as you pack. Either way, writing down the contents of each box is an important step.
It is best to label the boxes on the top and the sides. For those items, which should be handled with care, mark the box with the word FRAGILE, and draw the arrowhead to indicate the position, in which the box should be placed during transportation.
You can also label the boxes with the rooms their content belongs to, especially if you choose to unload and get your belongings inside the new house by a team of movers. It will help them get the right boxes in the right rooms, on top of facilitating the unpacking process for you.
You can make a list of the boxes to make sure that not a single of them is lost. To do this, number the boxes and check their amount and numbers before the loading starts, during the loading process, as well as during the delivery.
Where to get the moving boxes?
Atlantic Group USA LLC has all varieties of boxes and packing materials in stock, so you can easily place your order with us. Some other moving or packing companies also offer moving boxes and materials, so ask the moving company that you choose whether they can provide you with these.
You can also ask grocery stores and hardware stores for boxes, which are good for packing and moving purposes. When you choose and pick the moving boxes to get to your home, don’t forget that you first need to fit them into your car. You might need to fold the boxes to fit them in, so schedule some extra time for yourself for this mission, and make sure to fold and transport the boxes carefully.
If you damage them, or they are already damaged during their previous use, they might not be appropriate for moving purposes, and your moving company may refuse to transport such boxes. They might not provide the required level of safety for your items or may damage them through infestation or dirtying.
If you are buying the boxes, don’t forget to ask about the return policy for boxes. If you buy more than needed, some companies, like Atlantic Group USA LLC provide full refund for the ones that you didn’t use.
